Language:
The language the free Web site hosting service speaks. Usually
the Web site and all correspondence are in this language.
Space:
This is the amount of disk space you are allotted on the Web server.
Interest:
The types of Web sites allowed on the server. For example, some
services only allow personal Web pages where others only allow
business.
Ads:
Many free Web hosting services places ads on your Web pages in
return for providing you with the free Web hosting. These are
the types of ads they automatically "insert".
URL:
This is what your Web site address will be. For example, if the
listing says /you then your Web address will look something like
this: http://www.cheap-web-hosting-providers.com/
Upload:
This is the method in which you upload your Web site to the server.
With browser upload, you access your web hosting account and upload
files right through your browser. With FTP (file transfer protocol)
you can use a program like WS FTP or Cute FTP to upload files.
Some services even support upload with Telnet and FrontPage.
Email:
Some services provide email along with the free Web hosting service.
POP3 uses a program like Outlook Express to retrieve 'electronic
mail' from a mail server. Web based email is accessed via your
Web browser. Fwd 'forwarding' email forwards the email to any
existing email account.
Scripting:
There are many different scripting or 'programming' languages
available to add dynamics or special functions to Web sites. Many
free Web hosting services support different types and some do
not at all.
Editor:
Some free Web hosting services offer a way in which you can edit
your Web pages directly through your Web browser. WYSIWYG stands
for 'What you see is what you get'. This type of editor allows
you to actually view you Web pages as you edit them. The others,
advanced and basic, allow for direct viewing and editing of the
HTML code.
Preinstalled Scripts:
Some free Web hosting services install some scripts or 'programs'
for you. This allows you to easily add things such as hit counters,
messages boards, chat, and shopping carts with no programming
or installation knowledge. It also cuts down on security issues
and abuse when a service has thousands, if not millions of members.
Affiliates:
A great way to make a little extra cash is to ad affiliate ads
and links to your Web pages with a service like cj.com . Some
services don't allow this because they may interfere with ad campaigns
they are trying to run.
Miscellaneous:
There are many options available for Web sites. Real Audio, Real
Video, mySQL databases, SSL, and Telnet are just few examples.
However, the server must be configured to support them.
